Call for abstracts

The Scientific Committee of the 14th International Symposium of the World Society of Victimology encourages the submission of proposals by researchers, academics, practitioners and policy makers.

The Scientific Committee is composed as follows. Ivo Aertsen (Chair), Inge Vanfraechem, Felix Ndahinda and Sonja Leferink (Vice Chairs), completed with the following members: Gerd Kirchhoff (Japan/Germany), John Dussich (VS), Sam Garkawe (Australia), K. Chockalingam (India), Robert Peacock (South Africa), Annette Pearson (South America), Robert Cario (France), Carolyn Hoyle (UK), Katrien Lauwaert (Belgium), Josep Tamarit (Spain).

Abstracts for a workshop, panel, round table or poster presentation can be submitted by completing the online abstract submission form.

Abstracts can be submitted starting 15 October 2011. The ultimate submission deadline is 1 March 2012.

After submitting, each contributor will receive a confirmation notice. Notifications about admission and other practical information will be given within 4-6 weeks after submission. Please note that submitting an abstract does not register you for the symposium. All programme participants must register and pay the registration fee to attend the meeting.

All submissions must include an abstract of not more than 1500 characters. They should describe the general theme of the presentation and, where relevant, the methods and results.

Themes and possible themes can be found here. All sessions have a maximum duration of 1,5 hours. The working language is English, but workshops (if a joined proposal of three presentations), round tables and poster presentations can be held in French and Spanish as well. Panel sessions are in English only.

Please note that the division of the three conference themes during the conference week only applies to the keynote sessions. The various themes will be scheduled in workshops, round tables and panel sessions on all conference days.

Workshop

In a workshop, a maximum of 3 contributors give a 20 minutes presentation. Each presentation is followed by 10 minutes of questions and discussion. A workshop focuses on presenting, analysing and discussing a research or practice/policy related issue. Participants can propose a topic for a presentation within a workshop individually or they can submit a proposal for a whole workshop consisting of three coherent presentations on a common theme. In the latter case, the workshop proposer will act as chair or will indicate one, and must list the names and topics of the three presenters. Still, each presenter in a joined workshop has to submit his/her abstract separately. In the case of individual proposals, the Scientific Committee will compose the workshop and select a chair of the workshop session.

Provided a sufficient number of applications, the Scientific Committee will set up separate workshop sessions for PhD projects, with special attention to methodology issues.

Panel session

A panel may focus on a controversial issue in research or practice, or on a policy development. The focus is on debate. A panel can also take the form of an 'Author meets critics’ session. Panel members are preferably experts in the field and have differing opinions on the topic at hand. Proposals for a panel session include (1) a topic, (2) the names of 3-5 panel members and (3) the name of a moderator. During the panel session, it is the task of the moderator to introduce the topic, to challenge the panel members and the public, and to guide the discussion.

Round table

A round table session has a less structured character with the focus on informal exchange and discussion of ideas, views, findings, best practices or initiatives. Round tables can be thematic or, for example, sector or region based. A proposal for a round table can be submitted by a person who will act as moderator. He/she proposes a topic and the names of at least two persons who will participate.

Poster presentation

A poster presentation is a graphic presentation of a research project or current topic in policy/practice. It includes one or several sheets (A1 - A3 size). Presenters are expected to bring the poster presentation in print to the conference. Poster presentations will take place in a designated area of the conference venue.
